Frequently Asked Questions

Are Iris/Aromacology fragrances natural ? Are the Iris  products eco-friendly?
Iris fragrances have been created on the basis of the recommendations of Aromacology studies. Iris fragrances are a blend of natural oils and aromatic compounds. Each fragrance is created to invoke a set of emotions.

There is a common misconception that all natural oils are safe for use in any application. However; in reality, natural oils have to be screened for issues of toxicity and allergens. For instance, citrus and clove oils cannot be used on the skin in concentrated form, as they have photo sensitization properties.

Iris fragrances adhere to industry guidelines such as IFRA (International Fragrances Association) and GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) list of aroma molecules stated under EPA (Environment Protection Agency) in the United States. Apart from conforming to these industry guidelines, Iris fragrances are also compliant with regulatory bodies, in Europe and the US, that have established a protocol for dosage of specific aroma compounds for body and environmental applications. These regulations ensure safe, allergen free ingredients that are biodegradable and hence eco friendly.

What is the concept behind Home Fragrances? How are they different from Room Fresheners?
Home Fragrances are wellness fragrances; they are designed to rejuvenate, relax and energize the mind. They are harnessed by the power of Aromacology. Home Fragrances are used to de-stress ourselves and make the indoor environment a healthier and more pleasing place to be.

Consumers are eagerly embracing home fragrance products that neutralize odors and bacteria in our indoor air, not just cover them up. A stylish home fragrance delivery system like reed diffusers or vapourizers can be displayed as decor in the home or work place.  Consumers desire an attractive as well as efficient home fragrance delivery system.

Ordinary room fresheners can mask a bad smell for some time, and the effect lasts for a few hours. Home fragrance delivery systems are designed to work 24/7 and create a feeling of wellness.

Will you be developing fragrances for retail spaces–Hotels, Cafes, etc.?
Yes, we have a concept called Brand Signature Fragrance that’s specially done for brands which can be from retail, hospitality or any other vertical.

Ripple Fragrances recently launched a unique initiative called Signature Fragrance, as part of the Iris brand, where we can customize fragrances for companies. We will develop the fragrance based on a company's brand, its culture and ethos.

Depending on the customer's brief, the company's creative team, headed by MD and Master Fragrance Creator Mr. Kiran Ranga, gets down to blend at least three types of fragrances which are tested at the company's premises. Based on the customer's feedback, one of them is selected and it signifies the identity of the company.

Ripple Fragrances, one of the few companies in India to create and blend perfumes in-house, has acquired a competitive edge in understanding and creating fragrances that meet the unique preferences of the consumer.

What is Aromacology?
Aromacology is the study of odours and their effect on one’s mind, mood and health. The term Aromacology was coined by the Sense of Smell Institute in 1989, to describe the concept which was developed to scientifically study the interrelationship of psychology and fragrance technology. Aromacology seeks to establish the positive effects of aromas on human behaviour that are verifiable through reproducible scientific experiments. The results can then be expressed in quantitative terms and analyzed to determine their statistical significance. Aromacology is very different from the classical art of Aromatherapy. One of the largest differences stems from the fact that Aromacology is interested in any odour, whether emanated from living or non living things.  These can be anything from the odour of lavender, dirt, freshly baked cookies, pumpkin pie, the sea, etc. Aromatherapy is concerned only about the odour and therapeutic properties of plant extracts.

How is the fragrance delivered?

What are essential oils?
Essential oils are aromatic substances extracted from various natural sources such as fruits, plants, herbs, tree barks and roots. These oils are used in the perfumery industry and have beneficial properties.

How essential oils differ from other oils?
Essential oils and fatty/vegetable oils are two completely different types of oils. Understanding that essential oils are volatile by nature, should help to dispel frequent confusion about the relationship between essential oils and fatty/vegetable oils such as almond and sesame oil.

It is interesting to note that essential oils are soluble in vegetable oils. Because of this in aromatherapy, fatty/vegetable oils are called carrier oils. Since essential oils are often too potent to be used directly on the skin, diluting an essential oil, in carrier oil, is an excellent way to facilitate safe use of the essential oil.
